                                                           Flexible Foams


Flexible polyurethane foams are produced in two forms:

- SLAB STOCK (or BUN) Foams


- MOLDED Foams               

Flexible polyurethane foams can be produced with a wide variety of properties, simply by selecting different chemical raw materials or varying the formulation. 

Physical characteristics (Hardness, Density, Elasticity, Damping properties) can be adjusted with virtually no restriction. 

Flexible polyurethane foam cushioning has exceptional load bearing properties, is permanently elastic, can be manufactured in any desired shape, can be combined with a wide range of other materials and can be produced in practically any color. 

Typical applications:


- Furniture 
- Mattress, Cushion, Pillow 
- Vehicles and Aircraft: all foam cushioning for seats and back rests, interior trim, roof liners, sun-visor

   padding, topper pads for enhanced comfort in combination with interior spring, head rest, motorcycle

   saddles and bus seats. 
- Textiles: shoulder pads, stiffeners for clothing and laminates with textile for automotive interior trim. 
- Bags and shoes: interlinings and elastic padding in bags, heel, ankle, insoles in shoes 
- Domestic: adhesive, sealing and joining strips, cleaning aids and sponges for bathrooms and kitchens,

  carpet underlay, small die-cut sections for a wide variety of applications. 
- Technical applications: sound and heat insulation, filter foams, polishing disks, paint rollers, damping

   mechanical vibrations

- Noise and Vibration Harshness (NVH) Control

- Flexible toys


Flexible Integral Skin Foams

Integral-skin foams are generally classified as semi-flexible foams because of their applications in the automotive and recreational vehicle industries.

They have attached, densified outer skin, which is produced during manufacture. The skin itself is made of the same polymer, but noncellular and nonporous. Skin thickness typically ranges from one to five millimeters (0.04-0.2 inch). 
Typical applications:

- Steering wheel center pads
- Head liners 
- Spoilers and similar light- contact automotive interiors trim and external applications 
- Furniture trims


                                                                                 Rigid Foams


At the present time, one of the best thermal insulating materials available in the market are Rigid Polyurethane Foams, which are widely used in the construction, appliance, packaging, transportation, and recreation industries. These applications favor PU rigid foams for their high insulation, structural strength, protection, and ability to float (Buoyancy).

Typical applications


- Appliance: Thermal insulation of Refrigerators, Freezers, Walk-in coolers, Water coolers, Water heaters, 

   and Vending machines

- Automobile Industry/Transportation: Thermal insulation of refrigerated vehicles/Trucks/Trailers,

  containers, and railcars, Ships, Recreational vehicles, Aerospace. 
- Building industry:  Sandwich panels, Insulating boards, Spray-in-Place for insulation and sealing (Roof

  insulating and Sealing)
- Construction: Insulation of Tanks and Containers, pipelines, Cold stores, Roofing, Sheathing, Floor and

  foundations, Drilling platforms, Garage and entry doors.

- Recreation: Portable cooler, Skis, Wind and surf boards

- Packaging: Electronic products, Computers, Fragile tableware, Military equipment

- Furniture Industries (Wood imitation furniture parts)

- Frames and Plaques (Wood imitation)

- Flotation devices

- Industrial housings, e.g. medical and dental equipments


*There are virtually no limits to the number of structural design possibilities.


 Semi-Rigid Foams

Semi-rigid molded foams have more of a rigid character and may not recover 100% after deformation. These include molded foams for Impact Energy Management applications. 

Principal applications in auto industry:


- Used in door panels for side-impact 
- Knee bolsters 
- Used in Pillars for head-impact 
- Bumpers

Semi-Flexible Foams

They have higher hardness, higher density and lower resilience characteristics than typical molded seating foams. 

The principal automobile applications:


- Instrument panels 
- Door panels 
- Arm rests and Head rests 
- Headliners 
- Interior trim parts, including: Supplemental Inflatable restraint (SIR), Air bag doors, Glove box doors, and 

  console covers

- NVH (Noise and Vibration Harshness control


                                                                          Wood Imitation


There are two different technologies available for manufacturing wood imitation products. They are:


1)   Polyurethane rigid foam systems- High density

2)   Polyurethane solid casting systems







Polyurethane rigid foam systems, high density:


The wood imitation market is divided in two sections, including Furniture and Decorative items. The polyurethane systems used in this market are rigid polyurethane foams


Furniture: The applied densities for the Furniture applications are from 18 to 30 P.C.F. (300 to 500 Kg/m3). These items include bedroom headboards and footboards, legs, cabinets, mirror frames, and other furniture parts.

 Decorative Items: The applied density of 9 to 16 P.C.F (150 to 250 Kg/m3) are for manufacturing of decorative items. These items include wall and ceiling moldings, corners, window frames and other decorative items, which there is no need for structural properties.









Polyurethane solid casting systems

Polyurethane solid casting systems are solid cast two component rigid Polyurethane elastomer systems. They are commonly used for production of architectural moldings, picture frames, furniture parts, other decorative items, and structural floats and other design applications

They are typically used incorporating with high level of fillers such as glass microballoons glass beads, silica beads, metal granules, or other materials to impart density and handling characteristics varying from wood like characteristics (With high glass microballoon loadings) to stone like characteristics (With high glass or silica bead loadings).

Wood Composites

Polyurethane binders are used to produce composite wood products from renewable forest resources. Poliso offers binders to efficiently convert trees and wood waste into high quality, durable products for applications in construction, flooring, and packaging

 MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) 
 OSB (Oriented Strand Board) 
 LSL (Laminated Strand Lumber)




Microcellular Elastomer

Microcellular urethanes are high-density elastomers of cellular composition designed for heavy- duty mechanical applications. They combine the advantages of cellular materials with those of cast elastomers.

Typical applications for microcellular urethanes:


-  Springs for vehicles: including primary springs, auxiliary springs, and jounce bumpers.

-  Impact bumpers: These range from limit stops in delicate instruments to extremely heavy-duty applications.

-  Seals and gaskets: Seal applications, such as for ball joints in the suspension systems of automobiles,

   trucks and other vehicles.

- Vibration isolators: Exhibits exceptional noise and vibration isolating properties. The lower density grades are ideal for light  loads such as instruments, and the higher density grades for machinery mounts and motor mounts.

- Wheels and rollers: Conveyor components made from these materials combine gentle, quite handling with resistance to cuts, tears, abrasion, and lubricants.

- Recoil absorbers

- Orthopedic devices

- Footwear components:Polyurethane elastomers are widely used by footwear industry for the production of soles, which can be molded as units or directly on the shoe. Polyurethane offers versatile solution for all of shoe soling, in fashion, sports, casual, hiking, and safety footwear.


Castable Elastomers

Polyurethane elastomers can be formulated to achieve a wide range of hardness from 30 Shore A to 95 Shore D. Polyurethane elastomers are oil and chemical resistance. High abrasion resistance, impact strength, durability, tensile strength, load bearing capabilities and excellent tear strength are principal features of Polyurethane elastomers. Polyurethane elastomers have wide range of applications including, industrials, mechanical, and recreational goods.

 Composite Wood: Polyurethane binders are used to produce composite wood products from
renewable       forest and wood waste resources.




The unique combination of the properties of toughness, flexibility and abrasion, solvent, chemical resistance, and waterproofing, plus the ability to be custom tailored, has to led the widespread and continually increasing use of urethanes.

Polyurethane adhesives are known for their adhesion, flexibility, low-temperature performance, high cohesive, strength, and cure speeds that can be readily tailored to the manufacturer's demands. 

Polyurethane adhesives can be classified by several means: by the carrier (solvent or water, the number of component parts, the curing nature (thermoplastic or thermo set), and the physical form of the adhesive (film or powders).
